What causes all of those lines on sand in the desert?

When the wind blows over the sand neither the wind nor the sand are perfectly even. Ridges and irregularities in the sand cause the wind to move erratically. Turbulent air picks up sand in one spot and deposits it elsewhere. Eventually, you get ridges.
