What causes us to mishear what someone has said but then know a second later what it was?

In addition to what u/notyogrannysgrangkid said, as working memory, you often hear the sounds and fill in any blanks you may not have been actively listening to so “we need to go to the store” may sounds like “we need to close the door” until you actively realize that makes no contextual sense so you brain does an automatic reprocessing.
