In addition to what u/notyogrannysgrangkid said, as working memory, you often hear the sounds and fill in any blanks you may not have been actively listening to so “we need to go to the store” may sounds like “we need to close the door” until you actively realize that makes no contextual sense so you brain does an automatic reprocessing.

Usually what happens is that you weren’t completely
paying attention, but the information still registered in your working memory. Your working memory then requests it from your short term memory and interprets the information correctly, using context and other input.
