Being a bit wet and blown about isn’t likely to outright *kill* even small birds, at most it would be very uncomfortable. The birds simply hunker down and wait out the weather. They can do this in sheltered areas of trees such as nooks and crannies closer to the trunk, or just a bigger tree where the outer boughs soak up most of the wind. Other options are to move closer to the ground and hide in areas like bushes which are less exposed to the wind. It is even possible for birds to just sit on the ground if there is nowhere else to be!
