If you didn’t suspend your disbelief, you’d watch Lord of the Rings going “WELL THATS NOT POSSILBE! Hobits don’t exist! Magic isn’t real!” etc. So in order to enjoy to movie you suspend (meaning to put on hold, not to dangle) your disbelief and allow yourself to temporarily “believe” the law of the movie world.
