During the winter, bugs like mosquitoes almost disappear. I guess they die off because it’s so cold. But then summer comes and they’re everywhere again. This happens every year. How does this happen?
It depends: some diapause, it’s like hibernation, some exist as eggs, pupae or larvae (especially if they are aquatic or subterranean). some are just active, like snow gnats or flies.

Some insects hibernate in the winter, like some beetles, flies, mosquitos, bees and wasps. They can hibernate in the ground, trees, leaves.
Some other insects migrate, like butterflies and moths.
