I was wondering what a voice crack is and how it happens.

Think of your vocal chords as a sort of transmission. As in, the transmission in your car. Think of your voice as a two speed transmission. Now, pitch is determined by the relative thickness and tension of your vocal chords. At the lower end of your voice, your larynx is very relaxed. The upper end of your voice, on the other hand, requires your vocal chords to get shorter and thinner with more relative tension.

As you ‘switch’ from one gear to another, your larynx and associated musculature, have to go from very loose to quite tight. The physical transition between those two different positions has a sort of ‘hitch’ in it. That hitch is what you are hearing when your voice cracks.

A trained singer can vocalize over the ‘hitch’ and it would simply sound like a car with one tall gear, as opposed to two gears.

Hope this helps!!
