One of the current theories behind the chemical causes of ADHD is that people with ADHD have too many “dopamine transporters”, that is their brain is too efficient at removing dopamine which leads to unusually low levels of dopamine in the brain and causes the person to seek it out more.

It’s like the brain equivalent of someone with high metabolism gets hungry faster.
