what triggers trees to adapt to seasons?

Cherry blossom season is ending and trees are starting to get green. What triggers the trees to turn white or pink then go to green. How do they know autumn is coming and let their leaves fall?

temperature is the biggest deciding factor, but light also plays a part. that’s why sometimes in early autumn if a particularly cold front comes through all the trees will drop their leaves at once. the opposite is also true in spring where trees can bloom early.
