What’s the difference between wordpress.com and .org?

I’m trying to make a new site but I’ve just realised there are two versions. One made through a host and one not but apart from that I’m not seeing any real differences that can help me make a choice?

I had a premium package on the .com version but couldn’t use plugins or a lot of themes but I dont think this is any different on the .org site so…

Just want to make sure I’m not shooting myself in the foot or going through unnecessary trouble.

Please make this as much as possible please ha

One (.org) is for the WordPress software anybody can install on their website to use as a content management system or blog software, the other (.com) is the hosting company where you can pay to have your WordPress-running site be hosted on.

Ok… so the .com version means that they’re hosting the files and software on their servers. Because they’re hosting they tend to limit what you can use.

The .org version is for people who want to download the base software and run it on their own servers or other hosted servers. Because they have control over the install they can run a lot more themes/plugins.

Your choice then becomes: do I want to have the site somewhere other than the wordpress servers? If you answer ‘no’ to that question then you use the .com.

If you answer yes, then most likely you’re going to want to buy space on a shared hosting plan. You’ll also need a domain name if you don’t have one already, and if you DO have one you’ll need to get it either transferred or pointing at the new hosting.

When you host your own install on a shared server you’re responsible for maintaining it (updates to the base code/plugins/themes).

Some hosting providers do offer wordpress specific packages with easy installs if you go that route.
