whats the science behind people with “high metabolism”? Where does the energy go when they eat way above their maintenance caloric level?

In the toilet. The idea that some people have some kind of extra furnace that burns off the extra calories makes no sense if you consider how how hot that would make them constantly. Such a thing could maybe account for a few hundred kcals but not huge amount of snacks. So the actual reason is that their digestive system works better at simply not absorbing the energy it doesn’t need (or doesn’t work that well in the first place, but either way you won’t gain much weight). The better term would be that these people have ‘low energy uptake’ or ‘lean metabolism’.
