whats the science behind people with “high metabolism”? Where does the energy go when they eat way above their maintenance caloric level?

My cousin is like that and the dude eats WAY more than i do and we’re pretty much same height. Yet i weigh around 95kg and he weighs no more than 80kg.

In the toilet. The idea that some people have some kind of extra furnace that burns off the extra calories makes no sense if you consider how how hot that would make them constantly. Such a thing could maybe account for a few hundred kcals but not huge amount of snacks. So the actual reason is that their digestive system works better at simply not absorbing the energy it doesn’t need (or doesn’t work that well in the first place, but either way you won’t gain much weight). The better term would be that these people have ‘low energy uptake’ or ‘lean metabolism’.

There is only two outcomes. He doesn’t actually eat as much as you think. Or he has serious trouble absorbing it.

The fast/slow metabolic rates that the general public seem to believe are genetic lottery is bullshit. The total number of cells you have dictate your passive needs. Level of activity(sleeping vs running up stairs) dictate your immediate rate of metabolised energy.

So with that in mind, your short women vs your tall man shows a total cell count difference that explains their TDEE differences given an equal activity level. And fat cells count as needing energy too. So if you weight 95kg and he was 80, you have more fat cells and thus a higher passive metabolic demand in keeping them alive.

The overweight and obese among us that claim their skinny friends have a fast and themselves slow don’t understand their situation is reversed.

People overestimate how much food thin people eat, and underestimate how much they/other fatties eat.

You’re not monitoring your cousins calorie intake 24/7

You see him eat a big meal, and then he goes home and you don’t see him the next day, when all he has is a sandwich and some cereal since he isn’t hungry.

You see him eat a big chocolate bar every time you’re together, but don’t know that he only eats snacks on special occasions. He just likes it when he gets to hang out with you and treats himself.

Meanwhile, you forget about the daily 2L frappe mocha you washed down your frosted honey fruitloops that you had for breakfast before going out to the meal with your cousin because you sliced a few bananas into it so it’s healthy.

In the end, two people with the same levels of daily activity have very very very very minor differences in their metabolic rates.

Weight difference is entirely due to intake.

That’s the thyroid. It’s the overall engine throttle for your body. there are a number of hormones which regulate it’s settings. If you have hyperthyroidism the your engine burns hotter all the time. You have more energy, have trouble sleeping, can’t sit still, and burn more calories.

A friend of mine is 5’0 and 110lbs, she eats constantly. She eats at least twice as much as I do. She never gains weight. However, she is like the energizer bunny. She never stays still, she is constantly moving. After a few years of knowing her, I don’t think I have personally seen her relax. If just sitting for a minute or two, she starts hyper fidgeting and has to go do something. For her, she is burning all of that energy. It’s still crazy to me to see her eat a box of cereal and then have a cheeseburger meal for lunch, only to snack until dinner.
