When sick with a cold. Why is it you can blow your nose infinitely and your nose will still get near immediately clogged

Does blowing your nose actually help with this at all? If I keep doing it, will it eventually stay open so I can breathe? Whats the purpose it just comes RIGHT back. I just want to sleep 🙁

Edit: What I learned is my nose has a boner which makes sense because I’m completely surrounded by sticky tissues.

I also learned that reddit got some pretty good otc medicine cold cures that are very helpful.

Overall thank you everyone.

eat some horseradish sauce or something spicy. or even just hold your breath for as long as you can.

it creates a panic response and opens both nostrils. you normal only breath through one nostril at a time.

your nose gets plugged for the same reason men get an erection. blood flow is restricted and the vessels get engorged. making a smaller opening with which to breath through

When you get a cold, your mucus goes crazy and into overdrive mode to try to shed the virus through the mucus. Your nose is also just generally inflamed from being sick which is part of that feeling as well.

When you have a cold the inside of your nose is often inflamed and swollen reducing the actual size of your nasal passages and making them clog easier. Add to that increased mucus production from the illness and you will almost constantly be clogged. Eating super spicy things like hot sauce or horseradish, and breathing steam can help you to dilate the blood vessels in your nose and clear it out a bit. Medications like Flonase can also help.

It’s mostly swelling. it’s not blocked up with boogers so you can’t just blow it out and totally clear your sinuses. If you pinch your nose and blow (not too hard! you don’t want to pop your eardrums) you can get a tiny bit of relief but it clogs up again fast.

Like you’re 5: Imagine you’ve got a straw made of paper, and you’re trying to blow something out. Normally, when there is something stuck in there, it will come flying out the other end and resolve the blockage.

If, however, your paper straw gets wet, it may swell up which reduces the overall space available for air to travel through.

This is what happens when you have a cold.. rather than just blockage, there is also swelling which creates a smaller passage to breathe through, sometimes to the point where it is completely closed. In this case, the issue you want to address is inflammation rather than clearing things out. On top of this, constantly blowing your nose can further irritate it and worsen the inflammation.

edit: thank you your/you’re police for saving me from this embarrassment

Because your nose isn’t plugged, its your sinuses that are swollen, you could blow your nose for 3 days strait and nothing is going to happen.
