When we apply moisturizing cream to our dry/cracked hands, it sort of hurts a little, as if someone is stinging needles. Why is that?

Bad lotion. Lots of lotions include a small amount of alcohols to help them evaporate. They also usually contain additives that sting on their own.

Try a lotion with fewer ingredients, preferably one that doesn’t have any alcohols on the label. If it’s made with natural oils, it will probably be less uncomfortable.
