I’m not sure what phenomenon you are experiencing, but it absolutely should not hurt to apply moisturizer to your skin. Personally I get a relieving sensation when I use moisturizer!

Bad lotion. Lots of lotions include a small amount of alcohols to help them evaporate. They also usually contain additives that sting on their own.

Try a lotion with fewer ingredients, preferably one that doesn’t have any alcohols on the label. If it’s made with natural oils, it will probably be less uncomfortable.

A lot of dumb non-answers here… This happens to me as well during the winter when my hands become extremely dry and I apply a moisturizer, no matter what it is. I’m quite sure it is normal in that situation. My guess is that it has to do with restoring blood flow to the outer layers of the skin and therefore reactivating some nerve endings, but I am not at all sure about that.

For the record I have talked to a dermatologist about my hands and was just told I need to moisturize more and wash less if possible. It’s not eczema as some others are saying.

Most likely your hands are so dry theyre chapped. Try drinking more water, keeping your hands warm in the cold, and lotioning more regularly.
