Humans have three kinds of teeth, and they all serve a purpose. Front teeth are snippers. They’re larger and flat, with a slightly tapered end. They cut through softer items like plants and fruit. The larger surface also helps keep food from falling right back out.

The other two kinds – Canines are the rippers, usually kind of pointed. They grasp and tear tougher food, like animal flesh. Molars are grinders, mashing the snipped and torn food into a paste we can swallow.

When you bite with those they don’t hit head on with the edge, it would break. Instead the lower ones slide behind the bigger ones. This only works if the lower jaw has a slightly smaller radius than the upper jaw and the teeth are correspondingly a bit smaller.
