Why are primary colors different between pigment and light?

Pigments form colors by reflecting the color of light they make, absorbing all the other colors. This means if you mix all the primary colors of pigment you get black but if you mix all the primary colors of light you get white.

Many people were taught their primary colors incorrectly and never learned better. It is RGB for light and CMY for pigments.
