Pressure plates are a moving part. Moving parts and water are a recipe for scale buildup, sticking, and maintenance. If the moving mechanism can be sealed in a container and activated through an IR window, that’s likely cheaper from a maintenance point of view.

The cost of the valve is small, relative to the cost of a plumber to maintain it.

Because men stand when they pee?

I absolutely hate those sensors. For one thing, you can’t do a courtesy flush unless you awkwardly stand up and step to one side in the middle of doing your business. And sometimes they just won’t flush, which is an awful feeling!!
