Why are sensors used instead of pressure plates to automatically flush toilets after use?

I absolutely hate those sensors. For one thing, you can’t do a courtesy flush unless you awkwardly stand up and step to one side in the middle of doing your business. And sometimes they just won’t flush, which is an awful feeling!!
