Why can’t my laptop output 1080p when my phone can?

My 7 year old laptop has 8gb ram with a Intel Core i7-3630QM processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000. It’s maximum output via HDMI is 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz. Even low end sub £100 smartphones have 720p – 1080p screens at minimum. Has technology really moved on that much?

7 years ago, 99% of users wouldn’t have a display over 1920×1080/a comparable resolution in some other aspect ratio (such as 1920×1200). There’s no reason to make integrated graphics, which aren’t really designed for professional or higher end gaming to begin with, compatible with resolutions restricted to people with $2000+ monitors typically delegated to professional design applications. Even if they could, integrated graphics from 7 years ago would struggle even to play back video at higher resolutions. Even the higher end gaming monitors at the time were at best 1920×1080@144hz.
