Because auto-updating of apps has always been a feature on smartphones, along with using an app store as the only way to download and buy apps.
Computers on the other hand only added app stores in the last few years, and many apps still don’t integrate into the app stores. If they don’t, then the only way those apps update is when you open them and they check – if they do that at all. Other apps have their own background processes that run all the time and occasionally check for updates themselves.
On the other hand, computers auto-updating their own operating system (vs apps) is something that computers have had for quite a while, and this works fairly well and automatically.
