why do certain sounds illicit an unpleasant physical response?

For example when someone runs their fingernails down a chalk board or scraps cutlery together, why can it send a shiver down our spines? Other sounds don’t have this effect on us. I’m curious as to the science behind this.

For me it was teeth (mine or someone else’s) scraping on a fork. Drove me crazy, but I have no idea why.
