This doesn’t apply to everywhere but in my area police and fire are government employees and all ambulances are private. The police and fire dispatch through the same office but ambulances each have their own company and different rates and services.

The police are legally required to call for medical assistance if the person is hurt or requests it. Better to offer it than get sued because a paramedic didnt administer a bandaid

Most area have policies in place that an ambulance can not he sent alone and therefore a firetruck must also go with. You also occasionally see a firetruck first as a minimum the personel have some medical training and can asses the situation and see if an ambulance is needed if they are not housed together

The fire department has a fair amount of basic medical training and is often more available (and cheaper) than an ambulance.

They are bringing out emergency services, which includes fire fighter/ EMS. They travel with their gear in case they get called to go elsewhere.

This is the same reason you see firefighters/EMS drive to the grocery store with their firetruck.

My area, it’s because there are more Firehouses than hospitals around the city. All of our firefighters are also basically trained EMS.
