Why do some sounds from TV or movies, like ringtones or beeps, sound like they are coming from a different room?

This is a trick in modern sound systems. The sound is played on different parts of the sound bar or surround sound system at very slightly different volumes and times. They 1 millisecond delay added to the left speaker as compared to the right speaker tricks your brain into thinking the sound is far away or coming from a specific direction.
