Why do they call it comodo dragon? Are/were there other types of dragons?

And why not comodo lizard? Why does it have dragon in its name?

They’re called Komodo dragons because they live on the island of Komodo and some surrounding landmasses. And there are other reptiles that are called dragons, such as the [bearded dragon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogona) and the [Chinese water dragon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_water_dragon). It’s important to be clear about these kinds of things.

There is the common name and the scientific name.….komodo dragon is just the monicker to make things easier

The scientific name puts the Komodo dragon in the varanaide family of monitor lizards

Monitor lizards are found all across southeast Asia and look extremely similar to Komodo Dragons. Komodo dragons are considered special because that specific species only lives on Komodo Island in Indonesia. Komodo National park is actually incredible, the Komodos roam freely and you can go visit and walk among them!
