Research is still being done AFAIK but it’s believed that sounds in that frequency range (2000-4000Hz) cause pain due to the shape of ears causing an amplification of frequencies in that range.

I was always under the impression that the cry of a baby fell into that same frequency range and it was simply evolution that makes us pay attention when we hear it.

I wonder why I’ve never had this issue.
I know there are people who, even at the thought of taking a fork and walking over to a chalkboard, can send them over the edge.
