Why do we react the way we do to the sounds of a fork scratching a plate, or chalk on a chalkboard?

Research is still being done AFAIK but it’s believed that sounds in that frequency range (2000-4000Hz) cause pain due to the shape of ears causing an amplification of frequencies in that range.
