The forward gears are cut in such a way to reduce gear whine, reverse is not. So you can hear how fast you are going

It’s because of cutting of gears. You will notice very expansive cars don’t make any noise while going backwards. To make gears smoother, it needs more money, to cut the cost they just make forward gears smoother. Forward gears are mostly used in driving so they make those smoother causing less noise.

Your forward gears have helical-cut teeth because that makes them quieter, but they’re more expensive to make than straight-cut gears, and since you don’t use reverse for long periods of time it doesn’t matter if it’s louder.
