Why does a car going in reverse make that distinguished sound?

It’s because of cutting of gears. You will notice very expansive cars don’t make any noise while going backwards. To make gears smoother, it needs more money, to cut the cost they just make forward gears smoother. Forward gears are mostly used in driving so they make those smoother causing less noise.
