Why does it feel like time that I go to sleep matters more than hours I’m asleep for?

This might just be me and not a scientific answer for this sub, but it feels like when I go to sleep late, I will be more tired than if I had gotten fewer hours but slept earlier, regardless of how many hours I sleep for. Is there some sort of known phenomenon to explain this, or is this just something that happens to me?

Your body has a natural pattern of wakefulness and restfulness. Sleeping when your body thinks it should sleep tends to feel more restful even if you cant sleep quite long enough.

sleep quality is more about cycles of light and deep sleep than total time sleeping. your body has a natural cycle, and sticking to it keeps everything running smoothly. changing your bed time frequently is like whiplash for your body.
