You have alcohol dehydrogenase in your bloodstream which is the thing that “deactivates’ the toxic and drunkening effect of alcohol. Regular drinkers have a higher tolerance because the body needs to process alcohol more regularly (and therefore has more latent (ready and waiting) ADH). Those who don’t drink – aka “lightweights” have to produce ADH and this can take a while.

The flipside is, sometimes you drink more alcohol than your body can process through the liver. Therefore, you wake up still drunk because not all the alcohol was “filtered” from your blood.
