Eyelashes (and eyebrows) exist for the purpose of blocking debris from falling into our eyes. When you do what you’ve explained, your lower eyelashes are moving around inside your eyelid where the debris is, and catching it.

Your eye has two eye lids; an external and an internal one. By separating the two, you are causing a brushing effect, flushing the wedged object out.
