Why does pulling one eyelid over the other and blinking repeatedly get stuff out of my eye?

Eyelashes (and eyebrows) exist for the purpose of blocking debris from falling into our eyes. When you do what you’ve explained, your lower eyelashes are moving around inside your eyelid where the debris is, and catching it.
