Why does the sound of rain tapping on a window evoke such a deep sense of tranquility?

It is super relaxing isn’t it? I have no science to back it up but my initial conjecture is that we hear the inclement weather outside, and take comfort in burrowing in our safe structure. For me, it had always been a great technique to fall asleep by imagining some sort of turmoil yet I’m tucked away, hidden and safe.
In your primitive portions of your mind, you know that predators rarely hunt in the rain.
As soon as the rain is heavy enough, and you’re sheltered yourself, you know you’re safe.
Only thing better than that is light rain on a tent. I could sleep for days with that sound going on.
It may depend on your associations with it. I find it very tranquil and comforting, but I was surprised to hear my niece say she doesn’t like that sound because it reminds her of being in a school portable.
If you’re inside reliable shelter then subconsciously you feel safe and it relaxes you. Trust me, if you were under a card board box outside, the rain tapping on the box won’t have the same relaxing effect.
