why does your pinky finger lift up involuntarily when taking a drink of something?

I only do it when the glass is short and the pinky would curl around the bottom, or when the glass is of a small diameter and holding it with fingertips means the pinky doesn’t really reach the glass. Now I could grab either of those glasses with a full handed grip, but that is an awkward drink controlled by the bicep and also makes me look like Grog from the cave trying to use modern utensils. I would guess the hoity toity image came from that last bit. More delicate looks superior to some extent and that can be taken to the extreme for fashion.
