Because you were born attracted to the same gender.

Serious answer: larger range of motion. The tendons in your pinky finger are strained somewhat with rotational movement of bringing the cup to your mouth. By extending your pinky you don’t strain your tendon as much and can more freely and comfortably rotate your hand.

In Britain, we used to do it when drinking tea. The upperclass did it because it was the posh thing to do. Sometimes we still do it without really noticing. I think its because we see it in period British dramas and films so subconsciously do it ourselves.

I only do it when the glass is short and the pinky would curl around the bottom, or when the glass is of a small diameter and holding it with fingertips means the pinky doesn’t really reach the glass. Now I could grab either of those glasses with a full handed grip, but that is an awkward drink controlled by the bicep and also makes me look like Grog from the cave trying to use modern utensils. I would guess the hoity toity image came from that last bit. More delicate looks superior to some extent and that can be taken to the extreme for fashion.
