why does your pinky finger lift up involuntarily when taking a drink of something?

In Britain, we used to do it when drinking tea. The upperclass did it because it was the posh thing to do. Sometimes we still do it without really noticing. I think its because we see it in period British dramas and films so subconsciously do it ourselves.
