Ummmm I think you might be mixing things up. The ABV is the basic equivalent of the THC percentage. So it may be 40oz and 40% ABV whereas the marijuana would be 1oz at 13% THC or something like that

Taking a stab at it, but it probably has to do with the fact that most edibles like that are expressing mg per serving versus a bottle of alcohol which can be poured in any quantity desired.

Because THC is something that’s added in a specific quantity. Alcohol is something that’s added as part of a process and the alcohol changes during the different phases of that process. It’s impossible to know the exact amount of alcohol in terms of liters or any other measurement but they can give a reasonable estimate based on when and how the alcohol was applied in the brewing or distillation process.

It’s because alcohol was originally checked by proofing. Proof that it could burn gunpowder I believe. Proof is double the abv. 35% 70 proof. And you do alcohol by volume because it works for measuring the alcohol in a given area. Having measurements of alcohol makes no sense outside of things that need those numbers. I.e. hospitals, pharmacies, doctors, labs, chemistry, etc.

And it has been around long enough as a system that it works. Having a measurement would detract from people buying it, as well as make more complex claims for a demographic that doesn’t look for much.

Tl;dr abv is old standard. People don’t want to look like alcoholics. Numbers confuse drunk people, so less on labels is better.

Alcohol is normally not an ingredient that is added to a product. It is something that forms as part of creating the product. As such it is harder to control an exact amount. They can get a measure of the proof and could calculate back to get a measure of the exact amount of alcohol but it really would be a calculation.

With the pot products you mentioned they are adding pure ingredients into the product so can fairly easily control the exact amount. They add 15 grams of pot to x amount of chocolate to create so many bars with 15mg squares.
