why is it harder to play wind instruments with dry lips?

It’s harder to move your lips when they are dry. It causes some pain, but it also can be restricting for the skin of your lips. Personally, I play flute. Having to maintain control of the shape of your mouth as you blow is much easier with moisturized lips and mouth. I’m sure there is a more scientific answer, but that is my personal experience. I know wind instruments with reeds… The reed needs to be wet to produce the vibration that create the notes from the air pushed through. Again, much easier to do with moist, hydrated lips and mouth.
