Why is it that when a lot of people sing together the voice is deeper than the average tone?

Like, there are all these wellerman collaborations of thousands of people amd some have deep voices and some high pitched but someone together they sound low pitched

It is called virtual pitch, or pitch residue, in psychoaccoustics.

Basically you hear/perceive the funamental frequency (base tone) when the harmonics are present, even if this base tone is not played.
