Why is there a difference between world records for indoor and outdoor athletics?

Thought of it first when I heard about the recent world record in pole vault by Armand Duplantis but then I realized that most athletic discipline keeps the both apart. Why is that?

Because they’re often different lengths. The indoor track is 200 m while the outdoor track is 400 m. So an indoor runner has to turn more often, and usually at a harder angle.
