ELI5 answer: Your mouth sometimes moves faster than your brain.

You’ve heard grownups say “Think before you speak,” this is what they’re talking about. We all at times find that our habits of speech can get ahead of what we intend to say. So much of language and communication is instinctual, rather than intentional. Like chewing loudly or cracking knuckles, oftentimes what we say and how we say it comes out without us even realizing it.

The best speakers—public or just in a one-on-one conversation—aren’t people with faster brains, they’re just very practiced at thinking before speaking.
