My least favorite is when I do a Google search to find a simple factual answer and instead of taking me to a page where I can read the answer in one sentence, I am directed to watch long ass videos to hear someone talk about it. So annoying.

Because when you are reading an article, you can mostly ignore the ads. After awhile, your eyes just slide past them.

When you watch a video, the company can guarantee you have to watch 2 ads that are 15 seconds each. They can charge much more for those advertisements than they can for banner ads on pages. Thus, the content creators and hosts make more money from a video, even with the higher cost of production.

Monetization. Write a blog post on your own site about how to solve some IT problem and maybe you will get some pennies from ads, if google deigns to put your post on the first page instead of the spam.. or make a video of you reading the text over a screenshot and let youtube do the SEO and advertising for you.

But you can control this. Don’t click on the vids. Don’t install the vid apps. Look for the text.

Try doing something technical and all you can find are videos.

That is fine if I want an intro or an explanation, but I already know what I need, some key word or switch or CLI command or … NOT a 10 minute video which may or may not have the information and requires me to fast forward and back again and again to find the 10 seconds of useful, to me, information.

Social media is a good tool for keeping connected and sharing media with your friends, or for finding entertaining videos, memes, , etc. It’s an absolutely shit place to get any form of credible and reliable information, no matter the medium.

Ever since the release of ig reels, the platform’s algorithm has been favoring videos. So if posters want to reach more people, they use videos instead.
