Why is video so prevalent in social media nowadays? Often information has to be condensed to fit the time allowed and it makes it more difficult to follow rather than text

Try doing something technical and all you can find are videos.
That is fine if I want an intro or an explanation, but I already know what I need, some key word or switch or CLI command or … NOT a 10 minute video which may or may not have the information and requires me to fast forward and back again and again to find the 10 seconds of useful, to me, information.
Ever since the release of ig reels, the platform’s algorithm has been favoring videos. So if posters want to reach more people, they use videos instead.
Social media is a good tool for keeping connected and sharing media with your friends, or for finding entertaining videos, memes, , etc. It’s an absolutely shit place to get any form of credible and reliable information, no matter the medium.

I still rely on text. if a video has no subtitles I skip it. I never have sound on, most videos are annoying and give me massive sensory overload

I *loathe* video content where text would be just as good. I really don’t like having to consume the content at someone else’s pace, and I have trouble with auditory processing of speech anyways so I need to enable subtitles anyways.
Sometimes video makes sense (demonstrating something, commenting on something audio or visual, etc) but most of the time text content would be fine.
If you control the timeline of the content dispensing, you control when ads can be inserted, though.
What is even weirder to me is the lack of vocabulary in these videos. Okay so you want to film yourself speaking but then repeatedly use “like, um, the vibe, my aesthetic, I don’t know, you know?, I feel, so like…” over and over again.
And then the upward inflections. My gosh the upward inflections. “Sooo todayyy we have like… a little target haulllll…omg isn’t this sooo cute-ah”
