Why were ridiculously fast planes like the SR-71 built, and why hasn’t it speed record been broken for 50 years?

My dad flew the SR-71 in the late 70’s early 80’s. I would get to watch him suit up, what a neat experience as a kid! I also heard him break the sound barrier a few times when coming back to base. Dad absolutely loved flying this plane. I’ve seen him cry very few times in my life but the day the last flight of the blackbird came into DC, flown by JT Vida, he cried hard.
