eli5: How does counting sheeps make you fall asleep faster?

The exercise of counting sheep makes you try to imagine sheep jumping (for example) and that puts your brain in imagine mode and makes it easy for you to drift off into any other thing that is the lead up to falling asleep, because it is imagination, and not reviewing problems or traumas or other things that get your brain working on reality which is bad for sleep. I find that listening to music in my head is bad for sleep. Must be because it is real, maybe a different lobe or something. drifting off is the trick. And imagining sheep is probably helping that.
