ELI5, If dolphins breath air, then why do they live under the waves?

In: Biology

There are fish, tasty fish, under the waves. Living there, with their food, turns out to be super convenient.

Even though they’re mammals, dolphins would get too dehydrated if they went more than a couple hours on land. Also, they have evolved to live in the water and lack the mobility and food source to survive on land.

Do they died if theres no waves? 🤔

Because it’s easier for them to commute to air than it would be for them to live on land and travel to fish and water. They would have to build crazy houses that support their weight and keep them wet and they would still need to get fish. That’s a ton more work than swimming up for air and a bit of leaping fun.
