Are energy drinks bad even if consumed moderately?

Most of the negatives seem to be related to the sugar and calories. Acknowledging this early on, I switched to the Ultra Monster series. Zero sugar and I think around 10 calories in a can. What are the concerns about artificial sweeteners?

Most people think about sugar and caffeine as the issues with energy drinks. Sodium is rarely considered. Excessive daily sodium intake is a problem even for people in good health.

Moderation is key. I used to work alternating day/night shifts at my old job and would routinely drink 2 cans of Bang (300mg caffeine EACH, essentially almost 2 monsters or 4 red bulls) during 12 hour shifts to remain alert.

That was bad.

But once in a while, an energy drink is not a big deal for your health. Its like having a coffee, soda, and a bunch of vitamins, as has been said.

So many horrible answers in this thread. People really need to stop confusing their opinion with actual facts. Why answer a question you don’t really know the answer to?

Too much sugar is bad for you. Too much caffeine is bad for you. If your energy drink has more than 12g of sugar and 100mg of caffeine, it’s bad for you.

Think of a can of energy drink as “chug 4 cups of coffee, swallow a handful of multivitamins, and eat a scoop of sugar”. “Bad for you” is a relative scale, but I should hope it’s pretty obvious that they’re distinctly leaning away from the “healthy” end of the spectrum.

Not all energy drinks are the same and the answer can really only be meaningful in a lifestyle context.

If someone takes an energy drink prior to their daily gym regimen or their daily 5km run, it probably isn’t doing any harm and probably even helps.

If they’re taking a few energy drinks to stay awake to sit down and play their video games for 8 hrs straight and do this regularly, then the energy drinks are probably not helping.

How “good” or “bad” things are is nearly always a question of moderation and context.

They’re probably not good at all, especially if consumed on a regular basis. Everyone would probably be concerned about the caffeine but that’s not my concern. The other stimulants, high sugar and other garbage in them is no good.

Just drink organic black coffee and you can drink as much as your body can tolerate (within reason).

Most of them are like drinking a soda, taking a multivitamin and a caffeine pill. Probably not great to have more than one per day. Also too much sugar so drink the zero sugar version
