Big brands like Apple, Samsung, OnePlus and Google just so happened to all put a focus on budget friendly phones this year. How do tech companies know what products to produce/release every year in order to compete with other companies?

Even things like gaming consoles – Playstation hadn’t released a new console in years, and yet the year they release the new PS5 is the year XBOX releases the new series X. Before the social media leaks, how did these companies know to start working on the next big console (and coincidentally release it at the same time as the other competitors product)?

The biggest market for smartphones is actually the mid-range, not the top end.

While Flagship devices are worth more, less people buy them. Majority of people actually buy devices which are mid-range as they tend to provide the best intersection of price to performance.

All companies have been slowly pushing to expand their mid-range line up over the last few years.

Market research is a big part of it. These companies will gather a cross section of people together and ask them questions about their preference in relation to various products. They can then take the answers to those questions, and predict what type of product will be effective, and what will not. In addition to that, these big brands have been producing similar products for a very long time, it’s probably easy for them to read trends based on what has worked in the past and what has not. And even further than that, the state of the world certainly helps determine what kind of product a company produces, especially an every day item like a cell phone. This year has been a financial struggle for a lot of people, and a lot of people who may have spent a lot of money on a phone last year will not be able to this year. The big brands want to make sure they have some sort of revenue at the end of the year, so they focus on making the product more accessible to a wider group of people: this year that wider group of people are clamoring for budget friendly options.

As far as competition goes there are tech spies and people working on the inside everywhere. There’s too much at stake to not be spying on the competition.

Depend on how things are going and what things are trending. Currently, Corona is a big concern. Lots of people need to think further than tomorrow. So they make budget product to try and entice these people to still buy a new product instead of skipping a year.

It’s too big-a-venture for them not to be aware of what the other is doing. They both have AMD working on custom chips at the same time – there’s no way that stuff stays quiet.
