Eli5: why do children around the ages of 3-4 always have this big eyed lost look in their eyes like they have no idea what you’re saying?

Because you are a giant, an expert, a teacher, and a protector to them. At that age your words are the words of a god. And they are pretty stupid and lost at that age, having only lived for a handful of years and really only been cognizant for maybe 1 of them–everything is literally new to them.
